Came across some Silver
I was ripping down an old plaster ceiling today at an old house and all of a sudden a box fell almost on my head and crashed to the floor. It broke open and there were a bunch of old silver coins, Morgans, peace dollars, Walkers. So I put the whole bunch in a garbage bag and put it in my van. The new owner of the house hasn't even moved in yet, should I tell him about it? Or just be quiet and keep it?

Keep it.

Re: Came across some Silver
Were you the owner of the house? If so, I'd say you have dibs. If you were the contractor or something I'd say hey, I found these coins, can I keep them? If they say yes, great! If they want them I'd then offer them spot for them. I would personally have trouble taking them from somebody else's house I never owned and not telling them.

Re: Came across some Silver
I'm a contractor, the owner of the house bought it a month ago and I'm fixing it up.

Re: Came across some Silver
The coins belong to the owners......do the right thing....integrity is worth more than silver.
|
Re: Came across some Silver
How much is a bunch? What was the face value of it? And what is the current $ value of it? If it was $100 or $200 in value then finders keepers rule comes into affect. If it is a lot more than that well its up to your conscience what to do.

Re: Came across some Silver
I was just in my garage looking at it and there was a package and in it was 10 20 mark german gold coins.

One rule to live by. Don't be a petty thief. Now if we're talking a sizeable chunk of money here I am willing to bend that rule a wee bit. :D Kidding. Tell the owner you found some old coins. You'll get nothing in return. No good deed goes unpunished.

Without a doubt......but you'll have no trouble sleeping at night. |

They are the same as British Sovereigns. A little less than 1/4 ounce a piece. You have 5 ounces of Gold there. I agree with Tn. Andy. This will screw mightily with your kharma. Hand it in. |
Re: Came across some Silver
The new owner of the house "should" be the owner or the silver .....but...If I were you I would look for the "old" owner of the house who should be the real owner, the guy bought a house and not the silver.
If the old owner is dead then is between his wife and or kids and you. If the house is a very expensive house then to hell with them and keep it because the owner is probably dead :Zzzz: sleep well, I would. </IMG> |
Re: Came across some Silver
There are also a bunch of stock certificates for " The Susquehanna Hat Company" on Bagel street. Anybody know about these?

Re: Came across some Silver
"Wallpaper stock" and "outlawed" gold coins. I bet we can guess when these were hidden.
|
Re: Came across some Silver
The stock certs were registered at one time. I would track down the owner of the stock certs....Kinda fun as a detective thing.
Don't keep any of it unless offered. Cast you bread upon the water and it will return 10 fold....The reverse is also true. |

The guy bought the house, lock, stock and barrell. Everything on the property belongs to him. Do what you will, but I'd recommend casting the ten fold and taking the soppy bread. |
Re: Came across some Silver
One time apmex (may have been called cheaper gold back then) messed up and shipped me 1,500 silver rounds too many. I called them and told them what happened. They were really shocked that I called. I ended up keeping the rounds and just sending apmex another check. This was when silver was in the 5-6 buck range.
The laws of the universe are very simple. What you do or what you give out shall return back to you, positive or negative. Sure you can keep the coins, just be ready to pay at least 10 times the amount of the coins in a future loss. The karma will come back swiftly. Mk |
Re: Came across some Silver
The only thing coming down on me from that ceiling was plaster and lath and old insulation, APRIL FOOLS !

Re: Came across some Silver
I've got an option if that ever does happen to someone here and it's not April fools day.
If you're the contractor on a job just cut them a deal on the work equivilent to the value of the coins. They'll appreciate the surprize of getting a cheaper price for the work and you'll enjoy recieving solid metal instead of paper as payment. Steve |
Re: Came across some Silver
I'm gonna be honest here. If this ever did happen to me I would keep half and give the new owner of the house the other half, and I would tell the new owner I'm keeping half. If they made a stink about it I don't think I would do anymore work for the person anymore. If it was the homeowners belongings I would tell them your stash fell from the attic and give it to them.

Now if they immediately showed up and asked for them,I'd give it to em. But like at auction,if a book you buy had coins in it,they are yours to keep. A contractor taking property from someone elses home, thats theft, period. Spuds:sheep: |
